Welcome to the q-bio Summer School and Conference!

The Fifth q-bio Summer School on Cellular Information Processing

From Q-bio

The Fifth Annual q-bio Summer School is intended to advance predictive modeling of cellular regulatory systems. Participants will attend daily lectures about theory and modeling of cellular regulatory systems and networks. They will work in small teams on open-ended projects under the guidance of the summer school faculty. The summer school is designed for graduate students, postdocs, or anyone with a quantitative background who is new to modeling cellular regulatory systems and networks. After the summer school, students will participate in the The Fifth q-bio Conference on Cellular Information Processing.

The q-bio Summer School is not affiliated with arXiv.q-bio.

  • Summer School Applications are now CLOSED

Themes

The school comprises four overlapping series of lectures and three major themes (stochastic gene regulation, cell signaling systems, and multiscale properties of biomolecules). A prospective student should have research interests in one of these areas. Please click on each of the themes to learn more, and to obtain a theme syllabus and list of suggested readings.

Program Overview

Unless otherwise noted, the school schedule will consist of approximately 3 hours of lectures in the morning. A typical schedule will look like

  • 9:00-10:45 -- Lecture One
  • 10:45-11:00 -- Break
  • 11:00-12:45 -- Lecture Two

12:45-2:00 -- Lunch

Afternoons will be left for other activities, such as invited seminars, student talks (Talks will be selected from student abstracts), journal club discussions, group project/homework meetings, study sessions, continuation of the participants' regular academic work, and recreation. A classroom with wireless internet access will be reserved for the school participants for all afternoons during the school program. Additionally, we expect the students to spend some of the afternoons with the school faculty, most of whom are scientists at LANL, familiarizing themselves with the workings of the research institution and potentially starting collaborative research with the faculty.

Lecturers

During the course of the summer school, students will interact with over 20 different researchers in the various fields of quantitative biology. Each of the following researchers has agreed to give a lecture to introduce their own particular interests in the analysis of biological systems.

Students

This year we have had more than twice as many applications than any year in the past. In the end we were only able to accept 39 students for the summer school. For a list of students and their institutions, email addresses and links to their personal web-sites, please visit: q-Bio11 Student List.

Tuition

Tuition for the 2011 q-bio Summer School is $500, but may be waived in certain circumstances. Tuition includes catered lunches during the school.

Please note that the q-bio Summer School and Conference are affiliated but organized separately. The conference has a separate registration and lodging fee - see the conference web site for details. If you participate in the summer school, we are expecting you to also participate in the conference. We are also expecting you to participate in the entire school. If you are unable to participate in the conference or the entire summer school, please contact the organizers to discuss your circumstances.

Hotel

The organizers have arranged for a block of rooms to be reserved for summer school students at the Homewood Suites. Suites are reserved double or triple occupancy. Hotel details are available here Please use the online application form (a link is provided above) to request a bed in one of these rooms. You will need to make your own arrangements if you prefer a single occupancy room.

Local Transportation

The Homewood Suites provides complimentary shuttle service within a 5-mile radius of the hotel. For additional details, please contact the hotel front desk.

We have started a ride board at [| RIDE BOARD], which can help students to arrange car pools between the airport and the school.

On most days, most students will travel to and from the school using the [| New Mexico Park and Ride]. To get to the school by 9:00am, students should catch the Blue route in Pojoaque (at the Buffalo Thunder Resort) at 8:12am. This will drop them off at TA-3 at 8:42, and it is a 5 minute walk to the school building.

Finding the Summer School

The morning sessions of the summer school will all take place in Room 203A/B of the Los Alamos Research Park building (Building 4200 in Technical Area 3). the timing and location of afternoon will vary from day to day, but most will be in the same building.

Visiting Los Alamos National Laboratory

Certain themes and course projects will require students to visit Los Alamos National Laboratory to meet with researchers. To visit laboratory property all students including US citizens must bring a valid Passport.

Additional information on visits will be posted later.

Weekend Activities

The organizers are not involved in the planning of these activities. Past students have organized a variety of group weekend activities. Past activities have included white water rafting and funyaking, cliff jumping, rock climbing and hiking (e.g., to the top of Santa Fe Baldy or to hot springs in the Jemez mountains).
