Welcome to the Ninth Annual q-bio Summer School

  • History & Background
    • Started in 2007 in Los Alamos as part of an initiative in quantitative biology at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
    • Multiple sponsors over the years, including NIH/NIGMS
    • Currently, there are three campuses
    • The New Mexico branch of the school is organized by the New Mexico Consortium (NMC) and the Center for Spatiotemporal Modeling (STMC), a National Center for Systems Biology.
    • Many lecturers are from LANL and STMC.
    • Recognize the NMC on-site support staff: Irene and Ashley
    • Scientific organizers will introduce themselves after this welcome.
  • Projects & Labs
    • All students are expected to work on a project
    • Numerous summer school projects have eventually led to publications
    • A possible venue for publication is the q-bio special issue in Physical Biology
    • Projects and labs will be described after this welcome – you will need to sign up to participate in a lab (see Mara)
    • Project teams will meet at the end of the day – go to the meeting room for the project that most interests you
  • Student talks start tomorrow – please sign up (see an organizer)
  • Posters
    • Poster session at end of school
    • Free poster printing is available – send an email to Shannan Yeager with a pre-sized PDF file (one dimension must be less than 52 inches or 130 cm).
  • The detailed schedule is online at the wiki site – please check for updates, which are likely to be made frequently
    • Breakfast (at La Posada)
    • Two morning lectures (Lobo A&B)
    • Lunch (SUB food court)
    • Student talks (Lobo A&B)
    • Computer lab or labs (break out rooms, Sandia and Scholars)
      • There are some days with two labs scheduled
      • On these days, you will need to pick one of the two
    • Talk (Lobo A&B)
    • Dinner (at La Posada)
    • Evenings are free for project work – use study rooms and lounges in dorm or library
  • Weekends are free
    • There are no officially sponsored activities
