Why model in biology?

I bet you think this is a strange question and out of context in a q-Bio Summer School. However, as scientists, it is always good to step back and reflect on our work. In my career, I have been asked often this same question, even by NIH grant reviewers, so it can't be a completely 'crazy' question. Or maybe it is!!! I would like to conduct an open discussion on this topic, to hear your ideas and present my views with concrete examples.
