UQ-bio Career Discussions

UQ-bio Career Discussions

Quantitative biology is one of the most diverse disciplines in STEM, and members of our growing q-bio community come from every conceivable field and from every part of the world.  But unlike traditional fields of science engineering and mathematics, there are no well-traveled paths – every q-bio career is as unique as the q-bio person who has created that career.  We are very excited for you as you choose to embark upon this exciting career path, and we want you to know that the q-bio community is here to help you make the most of your education and training.

For this reason, the UQ-bio program proudly presents career discussion panels. In these career discussion panels, we will assemble panels of expert scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from many different career positions, and we will discuss important topics that are encountered by early career q-biologists as they navigate their careers.  We will discuss issues about how to recognize a good research project; how to apply for graduate schools; how to discuss and stand up against bias and discrimination in scientific pursuits; how to deal with conflict in a student-mentor relationship; how to apply for fellowships or paid research positions; how to balance work, study and life; and many more.  During each moderated panel, the expert panelists field frank questions from the moderator and audience.  Please find below links to recordings of career discussions from the 2021 UQ-BIO program:
